What if oxygen vanished from the planet? Not indefinitely; only, say, for an hour?
Did you manage to hold your breath?
How would the atmosphere change?
Will the planet ever fully recover?
Take a good, long breath. Consider how fulfilling that is. ”Nice.” Oxygen is what you are breathing in. Moreover, it occupies around 21% of our atmosphere. It is not the gas that is most prevalent in our environment. No-Breath, how do you breathe? Yet, it is the most significant. Without oxygen, water, animals, plants, and people wouldn't exist as they do today. Yet, you must now bid an hourlong farewell to that lovely, lovely, breathing air. However, you don't seem to be in a favorable situation. *Arnie makes scream sounds * The longest breath ever held was held for 24 minutes and 37 seconds. Really good.
Yet given that the typical individual can only hold their breath for a maximum of 90 seconds, it doesn't really help. If the Your inner ear would be cruelly blown out by the abrupt drop in pressure if the planet lost oxygen for a whole hour. What kind of pressure? So, picture yourself suddenly ascending Mount Everest. You would then begin to suffocate while struggling for balance. Indeed, your heart would begin to beat erratically as you tried to catch your breath. Given that your heart and lungs require oxygen to operate, this is an issue. Excruciating chest pains are to be expected once that is off the table. Your brain would run out of oxygen in no more than six minutes, at which point you would expire. You see, an average adult weighs 80 kg (176 lb), and 52 kg (114 lb) of that weight is made up of oxygen. the lack of oxygen for the 65% of your body would simply go poof for the full hour. I'm referring to Thanos' snap-disintegration-poof, of course. Such a waste of the human race.
How would the rest of the world fair, though?
The Earth would certainly appear very different in an hour. You may bid farewell to the Hoover Dam, the Pantheon Dome, and anything else built of concrete without air. These constructions would fall down right away. A unique binding agent for concrete is oxygen. Concrete is merely dust without it. Buildings aside, any untreated metal would fuze right away. Metals have an oxidised coating that hinders them from joining together during welding. Metals would quickly bond to one another without that layer. And that's only on the ground. Things are becoming much worse. up top. Our defense against the Sun's UV radiation, the ozone layer, is composed of oxygen atoms that have joined together to form ozone. If oxygen were to disappear, the Earth would become quite hot. Nothing would shield us from the UV rays of the Sun. In cars, the combustion process wouldn't take place. Any kind of transportation that isn't electric will always fall short.
Millions of automobiles would be abandoned and corroded, while planes would plummet from the sky. It would be pitch black up there. Before reaching Earth, light from the Sun bounces off several airborne particles. The sky would seem gloomy without oxygen in the atmosphere because there are fewer objects to bounce off of, about black. Yeah, right. Also, the Earth's crust would entirely disintegrate as all of this was taking place. This is due to the Earth's crust's 45% oxygen content. The planet would enter a free fall as the crust would shatter until there is nothing left. That concludes our time. After an hour, the oxygen is once more flowing freely. It's a shame you won't be able to inhale it. considering that the globe was destroyed and all human life was extinguished. But would there be a resurrection from the dead? If it did, I certainly hope their lungs are more robust than ours were. Fortunately, you can take a deep breath of 21% oxygen with the assurance that this will never occur. I never realized how much I missed breathing. Moreover, I could employ some more. That's a story, then.
